st. leonard’s terrace, london 1997

St. Leonard’s Terrace, is a typical Georgian terraced house in west London which we renovated in 1997. Adhoc rooms to the rear were removed and replaced by an extension containing a split level kitchen which addresses a new timber terrace and is woven neatly into the rear of the house. Intrusive internal walls were demolished and a continuous timber floor surface laid to increase spatial connections between front and back. The four-square nature of the original rooms was transformed without compromising their integrity.

The red sandstone wall to the dining area creates a sense of enclosure and repose whilst the timber floor extends through the glazed wall connecting the garden with the interior. A language of open and closed elements on the facade responds to the domestic scale of the existing house. We designed the kitchen units and furniture working closely with a joiner based in Bath.
